Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural Education (SMSC)
At Elmley Castle C.E First School we believe that the personal development of pupils plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. Therefore, we aim to provide an education that enables pupils to have the opportunity to explore their own values and beliefs whilst developing spiritual awareness, a positive attitude towards others and an appreciation for the diversity of cultural traditions.

Spiritual Development in pupils is shown by their:

Beliefs (religious or otherwise) which inform their perspective on life and respect for different people's feelings and values.

Sense of enjoyment and fascination with learning about themselves, others and the world around them - including the intangible.

Use of imagination and creativity in their learning.

Willingness to reflect on their experiences.
What does this look like for our pupils?

We use the Christian Values of 'respect, forgiveness, truthfulness, thankfulness, compassion and responsibility' as a focus for worships.

The six values for the year are displayed around the school.

Lessons and learning opportunities are designed to promote interest and inspire pupils.

Our Religious Education programme enables children to learn about different religions and appreciate the opinions of others.

Moral Development in pupils is shown by their:

Ability to recognise the difference between right / wrong and readiness to apply this understanding to everyday life.

Understanding of the consequences of their own actions.

Interest in investigating and offering reasoned view about moral and ethical issues.
What does this look like for our pupils?

Mutual respect is at the heart of what we do. All members of the school community ensure pupils' have good role models and a safe, secure environment in which to work.

Social Development in pupils is shown by their:

Use of a range of social skills across several contexts, including working and socialising with pupils from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

Willingness to participate in a variety of social settings, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively.

Understanding of the way communities and societies function at a variety of levels.
What does this look like for our pupils?

Our PSHE curriculum empowers our pupils to develop a greater understanding of themselves, those around them and those in our local community.

Our School Values support pupils' relationships with one another.

Pupils learn about service in the school and the wider community, including the roles within the police, healthcare, the Post Office and Parliament.

We encourage pupils to participate in collecting harvest produce for local charities to support our community. Fundraisers are also held for Save the Children, Sports Relief, Red Nose Day, The Children's Society and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Positive relationships are encouraged and modelled throughout the school.

Cultural Development in pupils is shown by their:

Understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage.

Willingness to participate in and respond to subject relating opportunities - e.g. creative, musical, sporting, scientific, mathematical and technological.

Celebration of diversity and acceptance of different religious groups in local, national and global communities.
What does this look like for our pupils?

Our RE scheme of learning encourages children to expand their knowledge of religion and its impact of daily lives - Christianity is taught alongside Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.

Celebration of religious festivals throughout the year including Diwali, Chinese New Year and Hanukah.

A variety of Faith Stories are regularly used in assemblies.

Our curriculum offers opportunities for pupils to create links with other schools in different countries.
